How do you find the “unicorn” employee in today’s employment market?

How do you find the “unicorn” employee in today’s employment market?

May 2024

Last month during our April Virtual Success Summit, we featured Shadi Chakoutahi, Owner of Staffing Proxy. Shadi discussed the hiring trends and what it takes to attract and keep the Unicorn employee in a highly competitive hearing healthcare job market.

Here are some key statistics facing the audiology job market today:

5:1  For every five providers entering the industry (AuD and HIS), one
leaves, retires, or transitions to a non-clinical role.

1:8 The average tenure of an Audiologist or HIS is 1.8 years

9:1 For every Audiologist or HIS looking for employment, there are no
fewer than 9 jobs available.

What does this mean for employers?

The current nature of today’s job market shows tenure and loyalty to a business, no longer matter (1.8 years). Hearing healthcare providers have a multitude of employment opportunities (9:1) and the key is differentiating your practice and its brand to make it stand out amongst the competition. Rethinking ways to be more attractive will improve attraction and retention of candidates.

Jobseekers remain in control in 2024 and here is what matters to them:

  • A practices reputation in the community and their social media presence.
  • Compensation can no longer be limited to salary and a bonus, practices need to consider retirement plans, help with student loans or relocation packages.
  • Work-life balance offering flexibility if a provider needs to take an unexpected day off and offering employees paid time off immediately, rather than waiting to earn it.
  • Scope of work, responsibility, and growth in a role matter to candidates and improve retention.
